Descending from ancient populations of Homo erectus of whom they inherited some anatomical features, Neanderthals mixed with the first Homo sapiens who arrived in Europe at the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic. The DNA study shows that some present populations in Europe and in the Middle-East are part Neanderthals in their genetic heritage.
