This graphic is read in chronological order, from the centre to its periphery.
The successive circles correspond to the segmentation of time in geologic sequence beginning with Precambrian, then Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and lastly Quaternary. The coloured branches illustrate the progressive diversification of the plant life on the right, and the animal life on the left.
Dates are expressed in millions of years.
Therefore, in the centre, the emergence of life goes back to 3,800 million years, a great 3.8 billion years, while the human kind, in pink, originated from the primate order some 8 to 10 million years ago.
