These carved or engraved blocks are stylized human representations.
The raised eyes and nose give form to a face without a mouth.
The arms and hands situated in the middle are associated with a pendant on stele #1 and a dagger on the stele #2. The engravings on the face allude to tattoos or scars. The ones on the body evoke a garment depicting pleated fabric or a belt.
These stelae are rarely seen in Provence, but more common in the Languedoc region and could refer to ancestor worship, considered deified heroes. The stelae may also have been used as landmarks.
